Cathedral Cave
Cathedral Cave offers an unforgettable diving experience. This special cavern is nestled into the North coast of the island near the picturesque Wied il-Ghasri. The Blue Dome delivers a truly unique underwater adventure.
The dive begins from one of two entrance points, either descending a long set of steps in the scenic Ghasri valley or using a ladder slightly to the east. During the summer months, entering from the ladder is more common. The coastal views in this area are outstanding, especially while floating on the surface. Descending, divers follow the left wall for approximately 15-20 minutes before reaching the cave entrance, enjoying a relaxed swim with plenty of opportunities for marine life sightings. With depths reaching around 60m in some areas, there are chances to spot larger fish, while open water divers can explore the shallows, seeking Moray and Octopus in the wall's cracks and crevices.
The entrance to Cathedral Cave is unmistakable, marked by a giant archway. Once inside, divers can take their time exploring the boulders covering the bottom, reaching the back of the cave before initiating a safety stop. Facing the archway during the stop provides a breath-taking view of the electric blue water silhouetted by the arch. Due to the proximity of the surface, the arch often mirrors on the water, creating spectacular symmetry. After completing the stop, divers can surface.
Upon surfacing, the grandeur of Cathedral Cave becomes evident. The cave is safe to explore without a torch, thanks to a crack allowing air and sufficient natural light. The water's electric blue color, enhanced by the incoming light, adds a magical touch. Even the acoustics contribute to the overall experience.
Divers can choose to spend as much time as they wish before exiting through the same arch and retracing their path back to the entrance/exit point. Overall, Cathedral Cave offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
