Billinghurst Cave

Billinghurst Cave stands out as perhaps the most ‘proper’ cave on the island, offering an iconic and must-see experience for enthusiasts of caves and caverns. Located on Gozo's north coast, the cave boasts breath-taking cliffside views on both sides.

Divers enter and exit the water using a relatively small ladder, positioned right on top of the cave. The ambient sound of waves hitting the smaller cave above adds to the anticipation as divers prepare to enter the water.

During the free descent to the bottom, around 25-30m, the true scale of the cave becomes evident. With a mouth approximately 30m wide and 20m high, the cave imparts a sense of awe and makes divers feel small in comparison. Extending over 100m into the coast, the cave provides an extended exploration opportunity. The initial coarse sand bottom encourages divers to explore crevices in the walls, revealing hidden treasures like Shrimp and Conger Eel. The walls adorned with colourful sponges create a mesmerizing effect when illuminated with a torch.

Towards the cave's rear, divers encounter a field of massive boulders, with depth decreasing and a glimpse of the surface inside a large air pocket. However, surfacing here is not advisable. Divers can follow cave lines to the back or turn and explore the other wall. The view outward is spectacular, with the clear, deep blue gradually expanding as you swim towards the mouth of the cave—a truly special sight.

Upon exiting, divers have the option to explore the outer wall or head for the safety stop under the ladder. Billinghurst Cave offers a unique and incredible experience for cave and cavern enthusiasts.
